If you rent, two things are worth knowing. Western Australia sets minimum security for rentals, such as a deadlock or a compliant security screen on the main entry and locks on the windows, and the landlord is responsible for it. And a tenant can’t change the locks without the landlord’s agreement, except in a family violence situation. If you’ve just bought, a rekey is the quick fix: we change the pins inside the locks you already have, every old key stops working, and the new keys are cut in the van.
Houses that had a security screen added later often end up on two keys, one for the screen and one for the front door. If the screen lock takes a compatible cylinder, we can put both on the same key.

We’ve just moved into a place in Belmont. Should we rekey?
It’s worth it if you don’t know who still has keys. We re-pin the existing locks so the old keys stop working, and hand over the new ones before we leave. If you rent, ask your landlord first. Tell us how many locks there are and we agree the price before starting.
What locks does a rental need in Western Australia?
The main entry needs a deadlock, or a key-lockable security screen door that meets AS 5039-2008. Other outside doors need a deadlock, a patio bolt where a deadlock can’t be fitted, or a compliant screen door, and windows need locks that stop them being opened from outside. Can a tenant change the locks?
Only if the landlord agrees, and the landlord gets a copy of the key. The exception is family violence: a tenant can change the locks without permission, at their own cost, and has seven days to give the landlord a copy unless the landlord is the person they need protecting from.
I’ve locked my keys in the car. Can you open it?
Yes. We open cars without damage wherever the car is, including near the airport. Have photo ID ready and something showing the car is yours.
What does a locksmith cost in Belmont?
