A gold-boom suburb that became an apartment suburb

Highgate was cut up in the 1890s gold boom — Mount Heart Estate in 1891, Bulwer Park in 1895, Woodley Park in 1897 — and built out from 1900 once the tram reached Beaufort Street. Art deco followed in the twenties and thirties, medium density and public housing in the seventies to nineties, and since 2000 the apartments that now make up more than half of everything here.

What survives of the first century is worth protecting, and some of it formally is: the St Albans Avenue character retention area, west of Beaufort Street, covers around a dozen properties, many from the 1890 Chatsworth Estate. Those cottages still carry original mortice and rim locks in timber doors, and swapping one for a modern lockset looks wrong and usually is not necessary.

For the other four homes in five, it is apartment entry cylinders, letterbox bank barrels, sliding balcony doors and window locks. We should be straight about the limit — we do not work on a building’s intercom or networked entry system. That part goes through your strata company. Everything on your own door, we handle.

Local advice

Worth knowing in Highgate

Locked out of a flat

Opened through the lock where possible, once we’ve seen photo ID and proof of address.

Letterbox and entry door barrels

If a key is lost, the barrel can be changed so the old key no longer works; common doors need strata’s OK.

An 1890s cottage front door

Original mortice locks that can be re-pinned to a new key instead of being cut out and replaced.

Common questions

Straight answers

Perth, Western Australia — postcode 6003, in the City of Vincent, just up Beaufort Street from Mount Lawley. Searching “locksmith Highgate” on its own will bring up London, so add WA or Perth.

The lock on your own front door is normally yours to change, though a tenant needs the owner’s or agent’s approval. Anything on common property — the building entry, the lobby, the car park — goes through strata.

No. We do not work on intercoms or networked access control. We do the door into your apartment, the letterbox and the balcony slider, and we will tell you straight when something is a strata job.

Yes. We run a 24 hour emergency service. After hours costs more and the price is agreed first.

Often, yes. Most original mortice and rim locks can be re-pinned to a new key, which keeps the door looking the way the character area intends. We only recommend replacing one when it genuinely cannot be brought back.
