Quick answer

South Fremantle, Western Australia 6162 is a booked job rather than an emergency run, and we’ll be straight with you about when we can get there. It is small — around 1,700 homes — with about 45 per cent of homes owned outright and a median age of 48. That means long-held cottages with original or near-original hardware.

A workers’ suburb that stopped being industrial

European settlement here dates from 1831, and the 1898 railway to Robb Jetty made South Fremantle Perth’s industrial heart — a power station, marshalling yards, an abattoir and skin-drying sheds. From the 1980s housing demand pushed all of that out, the marshalling yard was decommissioned in the 1990s, and the suburb gentrified. It is not an industrial suburb now, whatever the history suggests.

What is left is the housing: nineteenth and early twentieth century limestone and weatherboard cottages, held by owners who have been there a long time. The work is repair before replace, rekeying original mortice and rim locks so the hardware stays on the door, and improving security without changing how the house looks. Where a barrel has to be drilled we say so first and fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge — on a cottage like these, that conversation always happens before we start.

Two smaller threads. Salt exposure shortens the life of external cylinders and latches here as it does anywhere on the coast. And South Beach generates its own job: keys lost in the sand or locked in a car at the beach car park, a summer job, and a very South Fremantle one.

In the sand, or locked in the car at the beach car park. We come to the car.

A lock rusted up near the coast

Salt gets into the cylinder. Sometimes a service frees it, sometimes it needs replacing.

Our promise

No surprises on the day

  • Price agreed first. You know the cost before any work starts, including after hours.
  • Repair before replace. We only swap a lock when it is genuinely worn out.
  • Drilling never costs you extra. If a barrel has to be drilled we say so before we start, then fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge.

Common questions

Straight answers

Usually. Most period mortice and rim locks are worn rather than broken, and rekeying keeps the original hardware on the door while a new key works and the old ones stop.

We look first. Salt gets into the cylinder and the latch, and a service sometimes frees it. Where it does not, we replace it and talk about hardware that holds up better on the coast.

No — it is in North Coogee. It is the most common mistake made about this suburb, and the Fremantle Markets are in Fremantle rather than here too.

We do, as a booked job rather than an emergency callout, and we will tell you honestly when we can be there.

Yes. That is exactly what rekeying does — nothing is cut, drilled or replaced unless a lock has genuinely failed, and we tell you before that happens.
