Amco makes car keys at your car across Perth, Western Australia, for every Japanese brand, plus Hyundai and Kia, and most US built cars such as Ford and Holden. Most keys are cut and coded in roughly 30 minutes after we reach the car. We can open European and Chinese cars; the only key we make for them is a Volkswagen spare.

Is it just the battery?
The cheapest explanation is usually the right one. Try this first.
How to tell it is the battery
If the buttons on your key fob have stopped working, or a push start car says “key not detected”, the battery in the key is the first thing to suspect. The telltale signs:
- You have to stand closer and closer to the car for the buttons to work.
- The car unlocks on the second or third press instead of the first.
- A push start car starts if you hold the key against the start button, which is the backup the manufacturer built in for exactly this.
- The key still opens the door with the metal blade, but nothing electronic responds.
Changing it yourself
Most car keys take a flat coin cell (commonly a CR2032 or CR2025) and open with a small screwdriver or a coin in the seam. They cost a few dollars at any supermarket. Your owner’s manual shows the exact type and how the case comes apart, and for most makes it is a two minute job at the kitchen table.
Two things to watch: note which way round the old cell sits before you take it out, and do not touch the flat faces of the new one more than you have to.
Will we come out just to change a battery?
Honestly, it is not worth a callout on its own and we would rather tell you that than take the money. A coin cell and two minutes at home beats paying anyone to drive to you.
But if we are already there for a spare key, a rekey or anything else, we will sort the battery while we are at it. Just mention it when you book.
What if it is not the battery?
If a fresh battery changes nothing, the remote may need pairing to the car again, or the key itself may have failed. Both are things we do at the vehicle. See car key programming.
Worn cases, loose buttons and snapped blades
Keys live in pockets and get dropped. Cases crack, buttons wear through, and the metal blade can snap off a remote head key while the electronics inside are still perfectly good.
We can sort that out when we are already at the car making you a spare key, which is the sensible time to do it. You end up with a working spare and your original tidied up in the same visit. We do not do key repairs as a standalone trip.
One thing we do not do at all: ignitions. We do not repair, replace or rekey ignitions, and we do not remove keys stuck in them. A key snapped in a car door is different, and that we can extract.

Can you open my car at night?
Yes. Our 24 hour emergency service covers car lockouts across Perth. After hours jobs cost more than business hours, and we agree the price with you first.
Can you open a European car?
Yes. European and Chinese cars are unlock only, apart from a Volkswagen spare while you still have a working key.
Do I need to show ID?
Yes. We ask for photo ID and proof that the car is yours before we open it or make a key.
Do you fix ignitions or keys stuck in them?
No. We don’t repair, replace or rekey ignitions or car door locks, and we don’t remove keys stuck in ignitions. We’ll put you onto someone who does.
Can you open my car without damage?
Yes. We open cars without any damage to the paint, seals or lock.
My key fob has stopped working. Is it the battery?
Almost always, yes. If you have to stand closer to the car than you used to, or a push start car says the key is not detected, change the coin cell first: usually a CR2032 or CR2025, a few dollars, two minutes at home. If a fresh battery changes nothing, the remote may need pairing to the car again, and we do that at the car.
Will you come out just to change a key battery?
It is not worth a callout on its own and we would rather say so than take the money. If we are already there for a spare key or another job, we will sort it while we are at it. Just mention it when you book.
Can you repair a car key rather than replace it?
A cracked case, worn buttons or a snapped blade with good electronics inside can often be sorted, but we do it while we are already at the car making you a spare, not as a separate trip. You end up with a working spare and your original tidied up in one visit.
My key snapped off in the car door. Can you get it out?
Yes, we extract broken keys from car doors. What we do not do is ignitions: no ignition repairs, no rekeying them, and no removing keys stuck in them. That is a different trade and we will point you to it.
