Applecross

Two eras, and one being built right now

Applecross has three clear layers. Alexander Matheson developed the riverfront from 1896 as gentlemen’s residences. Then between 1925 and 1935 the businessman Thomas Burke bought 900 hectares and subdivided it into affordable working-class blocks across several estates — that is the 1920s and 30s bones of the suburb. Street planting of exotics began in 1935, and the jacarandas are still what people picture.

On houses of that age the original hardware is often still on the door. A service and re-pin is worth trying before a new lock, some older doors never had a deadbolt, and a rekey after a renovation or a lost key makes every old key useless.

The eastern side is the opposite. As of 2025 around a dozen high-rise buildings are under construction near Canning Bridge, following the South Perth pattern. On those the job is the unit door, the letterbox and the balcony slider — not the building’s entry system, which is a strata matter and which we do not work on.

Local advice

Worth knowing in Applecross

An old lock that has stopped turning

Often it’s wear, not a fault. A service and re-pin is worth trying before a new lock.

A deadbolt on a door that never had one

We check the door’s thickness and condition first, then fit one that suits it.

Locked out of a new apartment

We open your own unit door, through the lock wherever we can. The building entry is a strata matter.

Our promise

No surprises on the day

  • Price agreed first. You know the cost before any work starts, including after hours.
  • Repair before replace. We only swap a lock when it is genuinely worn out.
  • Drilling never costs you extra. If a barrel has to be drilled we say so before we start, then fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge.

Common questions

Straight answers

Usually yes. Rekeying re-pins the locks you already have, so the original hardware stays on the door and every old key stops working.

Usually. It depends on the door thickness and whether it has moved on its frame. We look at the door first rather than just quoting a lock.

The City of Melville. It is often assumed to be South Perth, but it is not.

On the door into your own apartment, the letterbox and the balcony slider, yes. Not on the building’s entry or access control system.
