1940s cottages, now becoming townhouses

Doubleview was dairy farming land in the 1890s and was subdivided in phases. From the late 1940s the state built modest cottages across the northern part of the suburb, and those are its founding character. Early timber-frame construction gave way to brick and tile, then brick veneer infill from the 1970s, and since 2000 a steady layer of townhouses and rebuilds, especially in the north. The name comes from having views of both the ocean to the west and the Darling Range to the east.

When one block becomes two or three townhouses, each comes with new hardware, a letterbox and a gate, and it is easy to end up with three or four keys for one property. Keying it all alike at the start is far easier than untangling it later.

The surviving cottages from that period are the other half. Their timber-frame doors and original cylinders are old, so we check whether a repair will do before suggesting a replacement. Apartments are only about 2.4 per cent of homes; Doubleview is mostly houses and townhouses.
