Built on the railway and the gold rush
Victoria Park started as a few houses around coach stops on the Albany Road. The South Western Railway was finished in 1893, the gold rush brought people in, and it became a municipality in 1897. From the mid-1970s, townhouses began replacing some of the original houses as people who worked in the city moved closer in.
The 2021 Census counted 4,940 homes. About four in ten are separate houses, close to four in ten are townhouses or semis, and a quarter are apartments. Just over half are rented.
That gives two kinds of lock job side by side. The older cottages often still have their original locks, and those are usually worth repairing or rekeying before replacing. The units and townhouses have newer hardware: the door into your unit, the letterbox, and the slider onto the balcony or courtyard. A building’s common entry is a matter for the strata.
