The Springs, and everything around it
Rivervale was Barndon Hill until 1884 and spent most of its life as ordinary 1950s and 60s housing. What changed it is the Springs precinct near Great Eastern Highway and the river — an apartment and office quarter still being built, planned to reach around a thousand dwellings and forty thousand square metres of office space, with its own City of Belmont design guidelines.
That gives Rivervale a job list unlike its neighbours. In a building of a hundred units the everyday work is the door into an individual apartment, the letterbox bank, a storeroom lock, and a rekey when the tenancy changes. With half the suburb renting and the lowest settled ownership east of the city, that last one happens constantly.
