Quick answer

Carlisle, Western Australia 6101 is in the Town of Victoria Park — not the City of Belmont — and it has the oldest housing of the suburbs around it. Nearly 31 per cent of homes are villas or townhouses, and about 43 per cent are rented. Older doors and worn cylinders make repair or replace a real question here.

A wide-street grid, steadily subdivided

Carlisle was laid out by Peet and Co after the 1890s and took its present name in 1919, the year the primary school opened. The street pattern is a traditional grid with unusually wide twenty-metre road reservations and established street trees, and the original quarter-acre blocks have been subdivided steadily into front-and-rear pairs and villa groups ever since.

Because the stock is older than its neighbours, the hardware is too. Original mortice locks, aged cylinders and timber jambs that have moved with eighty or ninety seasons — so the repair-or-replace question comes up, and now and then a barrel has to be drilled. When that happens we say so before we start and fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge.

The subdivision pattern shapes the rest. A front-and-rear pair sharing a driveway, a gate and a letterbox is the standard Carlisle property, and keying it sensibly means each dwelling on its own key, with the shared gate cut to both. Oats Street and Carlisle stations both reopened in June 2025 after the level-crossing works, which has brought the area back into normal use.

Local advice

Worth knowing in Carlisle

An old lock that will not turn

On older hardware the cylinder is often worn rather than broken, and a service and re-pin can bring it back.

Keying a front-and-rear pair

Each dwelling independent, the shared gate cut to both. It saves a lot of confusion.

Screen door locks

Often added after the house was built, and on a different key. Where the cylinder can be changed, we match it to the front door.
