1960s brick and tile, carved up out the back
Morley was farmland until after the First World War and only got its commercial life in the late 1950s and early 60s — the drive-in, the hotel, the Boans store — before large-scale home building filled it in through the 1960s under planned town schemes. Tonkin Highway was then cut through in 1984 and physically split the suburb in two, which is still the first thing we think about when working out how to reach a job here.
The housing tells you what the work is. Sixty-year-old brick-and-tile means worn Lockwood and Gainsborough furniture, tired deadlatches that no longer catch, and security screen door locks that have simply reached the end. What we do not see here is apartment work — with apartments at half a per cent, letterbox banks and common entry doors are somebody else’s suburb.
