Seventy-year-old hardware, still on the door
Bedford was gazetted in 1937 as Bedford Park, after Governor Frederick Bedford, centred on the corner of Beaufort Street and Grand Promenade, and renamed simply Bedford in 1961. A few 1920s houses still stand on Rosebery and Salisbury Streets, but the phase that defines the suburb came after the war: the State Housing Commission built its first estate here between Walter Road and Craven Street, and the Grand Promenade shops, completed in May 1952, were the first shops in Perth built with taxpayer money.
That history is the single most useful thing to know before booking a locksmith here, because it dates the hardware. A great many of these houses still have the entry sets, mortice locks and deadlatches they were built with, and seventy years is a long time for a cylinder. What we see is predictable: keys that need jiggling, doors that have dropped so the deadbolt no longer throws, and screen door locks that have simply worn out. Is Bedford the same postcode as Mount Lawley?
No. Bedford is 6052, shared with Inglewood. Mount Lawley, Menora and Coolbinia are 6050.
My key needs jiggling. Does that mean a new lock?
Usually not. On hardware this old it almost always means a worn cylinder, and a service and re-pin brings it back. We only recommend replacing a lock when it genuinely cannot be saved.
Can you fit a new security screen door lock?
Yes. We fit Lockwood, including the 8654, Whitco including the Tasman, Austral and Doric, and we can often key the screen to the same key as the front door.
How many keys do we get?
Two are included with a rekey, and extra keys are cut on the day for a small amount each. Bedford households tend to need four or five, so it is worth saying how many when you book.
