Noranda, Western Australia 6062 has the highest outright home ownership of any suburb we cover — about 46 per cent — and the lowest rental share at around 16 per cent. One subdivision, one generation of locks
Noranda was named in 1977 — after Noranda Park in Florida, not the Canadian mining company, which is a common slip — and that date places the whole suburb squarely in the late 1970s and 1980s. Brick-and-tile family homes on generous blocks, built over a short span, and largely still held by the original or second owners.
That is unusual and it changes what we are asked for. There is almost no rekeying between tenants here and not much lockout volume. What we get called for is the discretionary work: a deadbolt that has done forty years, a security screen lock that has finally given up, a front door that people have decided to upgrade, or a rekey because a set of keys cannot be accounted for. The whole suburb’s hardware is ageing out together, which is why one neighbour getting theirs done tends to be followed by two more.
There is a second, quieter thread. With a median age of 45 and many long-term owners staying put, we are increasingly asked about entry that does not need a key turned — a keypad or tag lock so a carer or a family member can get in without a key being handed over, and so arthritic hands are not fighting a stiff cylinder. That is a genuinely useful answer here rather than a gadget.

Do I need to replace my 1980s locks or can they be rekeyed?
Most can be rekeyed. Hardware of that era is generally solid and simply worn, and a service and re-pin brings it back. We only recommend replacing a lock when it genuinely will not come good.
What is the best digital lock for an older person?
One with a keypad or tag rather than an app, so there is nothing to learn and nothing to charge. We fit McGrath, Lion Head, Lockton, Carbine, Lockwood and Yale, and every one keeps a backup way in.
We need a carer to be able to get in. What are the options?
A keypad code of their own, a tag, or a key safe. A code is usually best, because it can be given, changed or cancelled without anyone handing over a key.

Do you do rekeys between tenants here?
