A railway workshop town, rebuilt
Midland grew around the Midland Railway Workshops, the main workshops for the state railways for over eighty years, with the Town Hall from 1906 and the Post Office from 1913. When the workshops closed the site was redeveloped, and that redevelopment is what produced the housing profile Midland has now: only about a third separate houses, half townhouses and a sixth apartments, with the old coal storage dam now an ornamental lake beside a residential estate.
That density plus a very high rental share changes the job mix completely. Tenancies turn over constantly, so rekeys are the steady work and property managers are the repeat customer.
