A railway suburb that kept its town centre
Bassendean was settled very early — James Henty and his brothers were granted land here in 1829. It became a working railway suburb, and from 1951 the Commonwealth Engineering rolling stock plant employed a large part of it for decades. The housing that came with that is 1920s to 1950s workers’ stock, now steadily gentrifying with townhouse infill.
Three train stations inside one suburb is genuinely unusual, and it has shaped where the new building has gone.
