A garden suburb plan with 1950s houses on it
Lathlain has two layers that are easy to confuse. The plan came first: quarter-acre blocks were sold from the 1890s in the Victoria Park Station Estate, and in 1920 Carl Klem and Percy Hope laid the area out as a planned garden suburb, originally with internal reserves so every allotment had open space near it. The houses came later — most of what you see is 1950s brick on that 1920s layout, with the primary school built in 1956.
For a locksmith the layout matters more than the architecture. Generous blocks mean a side gate, a rear gate, a garden shed and often a detached garage, and every one of those has a lock or a padlock that somebody has added over the years on a different key.
