A 1950s suburb rebuilt lot by lot

Nollamara started as a State Housing Commission suburb in 1950, was named in 1954 and had more than 2,500 homes by 1969. Since about 2000 it has been rebuilt street by street under higher-density zoning, with the original houses replaced by two to four villas on the same block. That leaves two suburbs layered on top of each other, often on the same street.

It matters for locks. On a surviving 1950s or 1960s house we are usually looking at seventy-year-old door furniture and cylinders that have simply worn out — the question is whether to repair or replace, and we will tell you honestly which is cheaper. On a 2000s or 2010s villa the hardware is modern Lockwood or Gainsborough entry sets with an aluminium security screen in front, and a rekey means four to six cylinders including the screen.

The villas bring their own quirks: a shared driveway, a courtyard gate, a rear unit reached past two others, and a letterbox bank at the front. Letterbox banks in unit blocks are the one master-keyed job we do, so if the bank needs a common key we can sort it. These are grouped dwellings, not apartments — fewer than one in a hundred homes here is a flat.

Common questions

Straight answers

It depends on how many cylinders there are. A typical villa runs four to six including the screen door, and we agree one price with you before we start rather than adding anything at the door.

Usually yes. The catch is that many homes here have a Gainsborough front door and a Lockwood screen, which are different key profiles. We will tell you on the phone whether yours can be matched or whether it means changing a cylinder.

Yes. Letterbox banks in unit blocks are the one master-keyed system we do. We do not do master key systems for doors.

No. Nollamara is almost entirely grouped dwellings — villas with their own front door and driveway. Fewer than one per cent of homes here are flats, so there is no lobby door or lift to deal with.

Yes, we run a 24 hour emergency service. After hours costs more than business hours, and we agree the price with you before we come.
