Two hardware generations on one street

Tuart Hill was named for the tuart trees around Dog Swamp and was still largely rural into the 1940s, with the suburb proper established in the 1950s. What has happened since is retrospective subdivision on a large scale: single brick-and-tile homes on wide blocks progressively carved into duplexes, triplexes and villa groups, which is how a 1950s street grid ends up with sixty per cent attached housing.

That produces an unusual situation for a locksmith — a single street can need two completely different approaches. The surviving original houses still carry Lockwood and Gainsborough hardware from the fifties and sixties, worn and often serviceable. The villas built beside them carry 1990s to 2010s hardware in good condition. Assuming which one you are walking up to is how you end up with the wrong parts on the van.

Villas also have fewer doors than a house but more shared points: a common driveway gate, individual front and rear doors, a security screen, and a separate letterbox bank.

Yes. Your own doors are yours. We re-pin only your cylinders and nothing changes for the neighbours.

Often. It depends on whether the screen cylinder can be changed to your front door profile — we check on site and say so if it cannot.

Usually not for your own door, but check — some schemes have rules. A shared gate definitely goes through the group.

No, it is bus-served. It makes no difference to us since we come to you.
