Old cottages and new apartments in one suburb

The name Maylands first appeared on a land auction poster in 1896. Golds Estates of Australia sold the early blocks, and the suburb grew around the railway. It moved from the City of Stirling to the City of Bayswater in 1998, and the City counts Maylands as one of its three character protection areas, kept for its older homes and streetscapes.

Since then the area has filled in. The 2021 Census counted about 7,900 homes: about three in ten are separate houses, a third are townhouses or semis, and over a third are flats. Close to half are rented, and the average household is 1.9 people.

For locks, that means two quite different jobs. In the older homes the original locks are often worth repairing or rekeying, and the front of the house can stay as it is. In the units and townhouses it’s the door into your place, the letterbox and the sliding door. The building’s common entry belongs to the strata.

Since December we’ve been called out to Maylands at least five times.

Worth knowing

Before you book in Maylands

Just moved in? Rekey

You don’t know how many keys are out there. A rekey stops all of them and keeps your locks.

Keep the old lock

On a character home, a repair or rekey usually beats a new lock that doesn’t suit the door.

Have ID ready

We ask for photo ID and proof you live there before we open any home.

Common questions

Straight answers

Yes. Call 08 9444 2089 with what’s happened and the address, and we’ll be straight with you about when we can get there.

Not without the landlord’s agreement, except in a family violence situation. Consumer Protection explains the rules. If you own the place, a rekey is the quick fix: the old keys stop working and your locks stay on the door.

Most doors, yes. We open them through the lock wherever we can. If drilling is ever needed, we tell you before we start.

Repair or rekey first if the lock still works. Older locks are often worn rather than broken. If it has genuinely failed, we tell you and fit a replacement that suits the door.

Yes. After hours costs more and depends on the time. We give you the price on the phone and agree it before we come out.
