Guildford was the original centre of the Swan River Colony before Perth took over. St Matthew’s Church dates from 1836, the station precinct from 1881, Guildford Grammar from 1896, and Guildford Primary is the oldest government-funded primary school in Western Australia. More than two hundred locations here are on the State Register of Heritage Places.
That changes the job completely. On a heritage house the lock is often part of what is protected — original timber doors, rim locks, mortice locks, brass furniture and joinery that must not be damaged or visibly altered. Straight answers
Can you work on a heritage listed house in Guildford?
Yes, and carefully. Most period mortice and rim locks can be rekeyed or repaired with the original hardware staying on the door. Where a change would alter the appearance of a listed building, that is a question for your council before it is a question for us.
Can an old mortice lock be rekeyed without replacing it?
Usually. That is the point of rekeying — the lock stays, the pins change, and a new key works while the old ones stop.
What happens if you have to drill the lock?
We tell you before we start, not after. If a barrel has to be drilled we replace it at no charge and key the new one to your existing key.
What security can I actually add to a heritage home?
More than people expect, and most of it is invisible from the street — rear and side doors, window locks, gates and outbuildings. We start there rather than with the front door.
Do you charge more to come to Guildford?
