Quick answer

Noranda, Western Australia 6062 has the highest outright home ownership of any suburb we cover — about 46 per cent — and the lowest rental share at around 16 per cent. So there is very little tenancy churn here. What there is instead is thirty or forty years of original hardware on one generation of houses, all reaching the end of its life at roughly the same time.

One subdivision, one generation of locks

Noranda was named in 1977 — after Noranda Park in Florida, not the Canadian mining company, which is a common slip — and that date places the whole suburb squarely in the late 1970s and 1980s. Brick-and-tile family homes on generous blocks, built over a short span, and largely still held by the original or second owners.

That is unusual and it changes what we are asked for. There is almost no rekeying between tenants here and not much lockout volume. What we get called for is the discretionary work: a deadbolt that has done forty years, a security screen lock that has finally given up, a front door that people have decided to upgrade, or a rekey because a set of keys cannot be accounted for. The whole suburb’s hardware is ageing out together, which is why one neighbour getting theirs done tends to be followed by two more.

There is a second, quieter thread. With a median age of 45 and many long-term owners staying put, we are increasingly asked about entry that does not need a key turned — a keypad or tag lock so a carer or a family member can get in without a key being handed over, and so arthritic hands are not fighting a stiff cylinder. That is a genuinely useful answer here rather than a gadget.

Amco Locksmiths covers Noranda, Western Australia 6062. One licensed locksmith, mobile, no call centre and no shopfront to drive to. Call 08 9444 2089, or send a photo of the lock and we will tell you what it needs before we come out.

Most asked for

What we get called to in Noranda

Keyless entry for easier access

A code or tag means no key to turn, and access that can be given to a carer and cancelled later.

Replacing hardware that has done forty years

Deadbolts and entry sets from the original build. We tell you which are worth keeping.

Rekey after keys go missing

Re-pinned rather than replaced, so every old key stops working and the door stays as it is.

Our promise

No surprises on the day

  • Price agreed first. You know the cost before any work starts, including after hours.
  • Repair before replace. We only swap a lock when it is genuinely worn out.
  • Drilling never costs you extra. If a barrel has to be drilled we say so before we start, then fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge.

“Absolutely cracking service from Magnus. My wife dropped her keys last night and went to start it today and and it failed. We called 2 other places first and also had road side assistance out to inspect. Not one of them advised us to look where she had dropped it for the micro chip. They simply wanted dollars in their pockets without trying to solve the problem. After a prompt call back from Magnus and an exploded view image of keys components and 5 minutes of rummaging around the garden the chip was found, re-installed and works. 100% recommend these guys and will be getting a spare key from them in the near future. Thanks so much Magnus!!!”

Common questions

Straight answers

Most can be rekeyed. Hardware of that era is generally solid and simply worn, and a service and re-pin brings it back. We only recommend replacing a lock when it genuinely will not come good.

One with a keypad or tag rather than an app, so there is nothing to learn and nothing to charge. We fit McGrath, Lion Head, Lockton, Carbine, Lockwood and Yale, and every one keeps a backup way in.

A keypad code of their own, a tag, or a key safe. A code is usually best, because it can be given, changed or cancelled without anyone handing over a key.

No — after Noranda Park in Florida. It comes up more often than you would expect.

We can, but Noranda is not really a rental suburb — only about one home in six is rented. Most of what we do here is for long-term owners.
