A 1939 township, subdivided ever since

The area was the first declared township in the Perth Road District, with its boundaries gazetted in November 1939, and it filled up fast — driven by the district’s first public housing scheme of the late 1940s between Charles, Green and London Streets, and essentially complete by 1958. The original stock is late-1940s and 1950s brick-and-tile plus timber-framed workers’ cottages, and the City of Stirling records that those timber cottages have been progressively demolished for unit developments. That is exactly why attached homes now outnumber houses.

The practical consequence is worth spelling out, because it changes how a job is booked. A Joondanna address is frequently one of several dwellings behind a single street number — survey-strata groups of two to six units, each with its own front door and its own letterbox, sharing a driveway and often a gate. A rekey can be done for one unit without touching the others, and a letterbox barrel can be changed on its own. Tell us the unit number when you call and we will find you first time.

What Joondanna does not have is shops. There is no shopping centre and no retail strip of its own — residents use Dog Swamp and Flinders Square over in Yokine. That doesn’t matter to us, because we come to you.

Straight answers

Yes. Your own front door is yours. We re-pin only your cylinders, so nothing changes for the other units in the group.

We do. A single letterbox barrel can usually be changed without touching the rest of the bank.

For your own front door, usually not — but check, because some schemes do have rules. Anything on common property, like a shared driveway gate, does go through strata.

Not really. It has small local shops only — the nearest real retail is Dog Swamp and Flinders Square in Yokine. It does not affect us, since we come to you.

The City of Stirling. Its southern boundary along Green Street is the council line, which is why neighbouring streets can be in a different city.
