Dianella stayed empty late because the sandy soil was no good for farming. Four localities were amalgamated in 1958 and building accelerated through the 1960s, working north from Walter Road and Grand Promenade, with the St Andrews, Montclair Rise and Dress Circle estates finished last in the early 2000s. The result is an unusually wide span — modest 1950s homes on one street, large modern two-storey houses on the next.

What that means for locks is that there is no single Dianella answer. On the 1960s homes it is worn cylinders and hardware that has done sixty years, and repair usually beats replacement. On the 2000s estate houses it is modern door stock in good condition, which is exactly what takes a digital or keypad lock well — and with four homes in ten owned outright, these are people improving a house they intend to stay in.

The constant across both is the townhouse share. Roughly a quarter of homes here are villas or townhouses, which means a front door, a garage pedestrian door and a rear gate that arrived on three different keys and can usually be put on one. Dianella is also the centre of Perth’s Jewish community and its second Greek Orthodox hub, and the schools, aged care and community buildings that come with that have their own key-control needs.
