Why Menora is different
Menora was carved out of Mount Lawley in 1954 and built to garden suburb principles, with curving streets and single homes on generous blocks. The houses are Californian bungalow, art deco, 1950s and international style, mostly brick, and a good number still have the hardware they were built with. Like its neighbour it sits inside a heritage protection area covering homes built before 1960.
What actually shapes the work here is age. With a median age of 57 and more than 40 per cent of residents over 65, the question we are asked is rarely “how do I make this more secure” and far more often “why has this become so hard to open”. A stiff deadlock, a key that needs a firm wrist, a knob set that arthritic hands cannot grip — those are real problems and they have proper solutions: lever handles instead of knobs, a cylinder cleaned and re-pinned to turn freely, or a keypad lock with no key to hold or lose at all.
A quarter of homes here are held under life tenure or rent-free arrangements, which usually means retirement and seniors’ housing. In practice that means the person who calls us is often not the owner — it is a village manager, a carer or an adult child, and we are happy to work that way.

Straight answers
My hands are not what they were and the key is hard to turn. Can that be fixed?
Usually, yes. Most stiff locks are worn or dry rather than broken, and a service and re-pin brings them back. If the lock itself is the problem, a lever handle or a keypad lock removes the need to turn a key at all.
Can you fit a keypad lock on a retirement village unit?
Often, but the village or strata will normally need to approve it first. We are happy to explain to them exactly what is being fitted and what it changes.
Can someone other than the owner book the job?
Yes. We are frequently called by a family member, a carer or a village manager. We just need someone with authority to approve the work on the day.
Do you do rekeys between tenants in Menora?
We can, but Menora is not really a rental suburb — fewer than one home in six is rented. Most of our work here is for owners and long-term residents.
How quickly can you get to Menora?
It is a couple of kilometres from where we are based in Mount Lawley, so it is one of the closest suburbs we cover. We never promise an exact arrival time, but we will tell you honestly when we can be there.
