Quick answer

Subiaco, Western Australia 6008 is its own City and has a high apartment share — about 42 per cent flats with 45 per cent of homes rented. It also has streets of 1890s Federation cottages with original hardware. Those are two completely different lock problems within a few hundred metres, and we do both.

Two lock problems on adjoining streets

Subiaco was surveyed in 1883 and grew explosively in the 1890s gold rushes, which is where the Federation housing comes from — including heritage-listed homes with elaborate leadlight windows. By 1906 the municipality had planted 4,500 street trees. Then from the late 1990s Subi Centro was built on reclaimed industrial land, with the railway station rebuilt underground in 1998, and Subi East is being built now on the site of the demolished Subiaco Oval and Princess Margaret Hospital.

On the heritage side the job is repair, rekey and sympathetic replacement. Original mortice locks in timber doors, leadlight that must not be disturbed, and an owner who wants the front of the house left exactly as it is. This is where our drilling policy gets stated before we start rather than after: if a barrel has to be drilled we say so first, then fit a new one keyed to your existing key at no charge.

On the apartment side it is unit doors, letterbox banks and storerooms, with strata approvals in the background. We do the door into your apartment and the letterbox; a building’s entry system is a strata matter. And with two hospitals running at any hour nearby, Subiaco generates the most honest case for a 24 hour service of anywhere we work — people finishing a night shift and finding themselves locked out.

Amco Locksmiths covers Subiaco, Western Australia 6008. One licensed locksmith, mobile, no call centre and no shopfront to drive to. Call 08 9444 2089, or send a photo of the lock and we will tell you what it needs before we come out.

Common questions

Straight answers

Yes — that is what rekeying is. The lock, the escutcheon and the door all stay; only the pins inside change, so a new key works and the old ones stop.

Yes. We run a 24 hour emergency service, and with King Edward Memorial and St John of God running at any hour it gets used properly here. After hours costs more and the price is agreed first.

Often yes, depending on the scheme. Your own front door is usually yours, but it is worth checking. Anything on common property definitely goes through strata.

No. It was demolished and the site is now the Subi East redevelopment. Perth’s stadium is Optus Stadium in Burswood.

We tell you before we start, then replace the barrel at no charge and key it to your existing key. On a heritage door that conversation happens first, every time.
