IllustrationLocksmith in Nedlands
A university, Perth’s biggest hospital campus, and grand old houses where the hardware should stay put.
Nedlands, Western Australia 6009 looks like a settled, affluent suburb and partly is — about 43 per cent own outright. But roughly 26 per cent rent, much of it around the university, so it has a genuine turnover season. Add Perth’s largest hospital campus and you get a job list nothing else nearby matches.

Three customers on the same streets
Nedlands takes its name from a land grant to Colonel John Bruce in 1854 — “Ned’s Land”, after his son. Today it is genuinely mixed: student housing near the University of Western Australia, established housing to the south around the golf course, and a commercial spine on Stirling Highway.
The rental cycle is the part most people miss. Student tenancies around UWA turn over on an academic calendar, which means a burst of rekeys and lost-key callouts from November through February rather than evenly across the year.
The hospital campus is the other distinctive thread. Sir Charles Gairdner and Perth Children’s Hospital together run to more than 900 beds and thousands of staff on shift, in large multi-storey car parks. Keys locked in a car at three in the morning after a night shift is a real Nedlands job. And on the older grand homes, the work is the opposite of dramatic: original door furniture that the owner wants kept, rekeyed rather than replaced.

Straight answers
Can you rekey a student rental between tenants?
Yes, and it is a busy period here from late in the year. Booking ahead of the turnover window means you are not competing for the same few days.
Can you come to Sir Charles Gairdner if I have locked my keys in the car?
Yes, at any hour. We come to the car park and open all makes without damage. Bring photo ID and proof the car is yours.
Can you rekey an old house without changing the door hardware?
Yes. Rekeying re-pins the locks you already have, so the original furniture stays on the door and every old key stops.
Can you fit a keypad lock so a carer can get in?
Yes. A code suits a carer well: it can be given, changed or cancelled without anyone retrieving anything.
Is Perth Children’s Hospital in Subiaco?
It moved to Nedlands, on the QEII site. It is a common mix-up because of where it used to be.
