What the doors are like in Coolbinia
Coolbinia split from Mount Lawley in 1953 and was laid out on garden suburb lines, with restrictive covenants on title limiting most blocks to a single home. That is worth saying plainly because it is often misunderstood: Coolbinia is not in a heritage protection area like Mount Lawley and Menora. Its low density comes from the covenants, not from a council overlay.
The housing runs from the 1930s through the 1960s — Californian bungalow, art deco, 1950s and international style, nearly all brick and tile on a generous block. Hardware from that era is exactly what you would expect: key-in-knob sets, early mortice locks, and cylinders worn enough that the key barely turns. Most of it can be serviced and re-pinned rather than replaced, which is the cheaper and better answer.
The other thing about Coolbinia is the back of the house. There are eleven small parks in this suburb and several are reached through rear access ways, so side gates, rear gates and garden sheds are a genuine part of the conversation here in a way they simply are not in an apartment suburb.

Is Coolbinia heritage protected?
No. Unlike Mount Lawley and Menora, Coolbinia is not in a heritage protection area — its single-home streets come from restrictive covenants on the titles instead. That means fewer restrictions on the hardware you fit.
How long does it take to rekey a whole house?
A typical Perth house has six to eight locks and takes about an hour on site. Coolbinia houses often have a shed or a gate on top of that, so we count them first and tell you the price before we start.
Can the shed and the side gate go on the house key?
Usually yes, if they take a standard cylinder or a keyed padlock. It is one of the most satisfying jobs we do — one key instead of five on a ring.
Are my 1960s locks worth keeping?
Often, yes. Most of that era of hardware is solid and simply worn. We service and re-pin where we can and only recommend replacing a lock when it genuinely will not come good.
