Can a locksmith open a digital lock?
Getting in, repair or replace.
Yes. A locksmith can open a digital door lock that won't open, and Amco opens any brand, not only the locks we fitted. If the lock can be repaired, we repair it. If replacing it is better long term, you get both prices before anything is done.

Getting in, repair or replace
This guide is about digital locks on house and business doors across Perth, Western Australia. Digital, electronic and keypad locks are the same thing here. We supply and fit six brands, and our digital door locks page covers each one. A lock that won’t open can be any brand at all, so this page covers the ones we didn’t fit too.
Can Amco open a digital lock someone else fitted?
Yes. Amco opens any brand of digital door lock, whoever fitted it. You don’t need to track down the original installer first. Before we open any home, we ask for photo ID and something showing you live there, such as a lease or a bill.
This page doesn’t explain how digital locks are opened. If you’re locked out right now, our 24 hour emergency service covers house and business lockouts.
What should you try before calling a locksmith?
Check for a backup way in first. Many digital door locks take a key as well as a code, and a keypad that has gone dark can mean flat batteries. If the backup key is lost, or the lock still won’t respond, call a locksmith.
McGrath, for example, lists a mechanical key as one of the five ways into its Hamilton lock on McGrath’s own site. If your lock runs on an app, look there for a low battery warning as well.
Flat batteries are already covered on our digital door locks page and in our guide to opening a deadlocked door, so we won’t repeat it here.
What if the digital lock is still under warranty?
A digital lock that is still under warranty should go back to where you bought it for the fault itself. McGrath’s warranty, for example, sends claims to the place of purchase with proof of purchase, and it doesn’t cover a product that has been taken apart.
That’s from McGrath’s warranty page, which also lists installation by unlicensed people among the things it doesn’t cover. Other makers set their own terms, so check yours.
If you’re locked out, getting in comes first. Tell us the brand when you call.
Can a digital lock be repaired?
Yes, when the fault can be fixed. Amco repairs a digital lock first whenever it is repairable. Replacing only comes up when it is the better choice long term, and even then you get the repair price alongside the replacement price.
Prices aren’t on this page. You’ll have both figures before any work starts.
When does replacing a digital lock make more sense?
Replacing a digital lock makes sense when it is the better choice for the long term, rather than a quick fix for today. In that case Amco gives you the price to repair and the price to replace, plus Magnus’s honest opinion on why replacing now is the better move.
The decision stays with you. If you do go with a new lock, McGrath is one of the brands we fit, and our McGrath digital locks page shows the models we put in.
Is a digital lock secure if a locksmith can open it?
Yes. The strength of a digital lock is in the bolt, the door and the frame, and a locksmith being able to open it in a lockout doesn’t change that.
In 25 years Magnus has never been called to a home where someone beat a digital lock electronically, as he says in our guide to how secure smart locks are. What he does get called to is doors forced at the frame and sliding doors lifted out of their tracks.

Can you open a digital lock after hours?
Yes. Amco runs a 24 hour emergency service for house and business lockouts, and that includes digital locks of any brand. After hours costs more than business hours, and the price is agreed before we come.
Will you ask for ID before opening my digital lock?
Yes. Before Amco opens any home, we ask for photo ID plus something showing you live there, such as a lease or a bill. If your ID is locked inside, tell us when you call.
Do you only work on the digital lock brands you fit?
No. Amco opens any brand of digital door lock, not only the ones we fitted, and repairs it where it can be repaired. The brands we supply and fit are McGrath, Lion Head locks, Lockton, Carbine, Lockwood and Yale.
Can a digital lock be rekeyed if the backup key is lost?
It depends on the model. Some digital locks have a key cylinder that can be rekeyed, so the lost key stops working. Tell us the brand and model and we’ll tell you if yours can be rekeyed.
What should I tell Amco when I call about a digital lock?
Tell us your address, the brand of the lock if you know it, and whether it takes a key. Have photo ID ready. A photo of the lock helps too, if you can take one from where you are.
