Single or triple lock?
Single lock or triple lock
A single lock bolts the door at the handle. A triple lock throws bolts at the top, middle and bottom at once, so the door cannot be levered open at a corner.
We repair and replace both, on hinged and sliding screen doors, and can usually match the screen door to your front door key.

Single lock or triple lock?
A single lock bolts the door at the handle. A triple lock throws bolts at the top, middle and bottom of the door at once, so it’s much harder to force. Both come as keyed locks with a lever on each side.
Why a screen door stops locking
Most of the time the lock itself is fine and the door has moved. Hinges wear and the door drops, so the bolts no longer line up with the holes in the frame. Perth heat can also make an aluminium frame swell, so a lock that works in the morning binds in the afternoon. The other common causes are a worn cylinder and a broken spring inside the lock body. We check the door first and only replace the lock if it needs it.

One key for the front door and the screen door
Most Australian homes use either Gainsborough or Lockwood keys. If your front door is one brand and your screen door is the other, you end up with two keys. Changing the cylinder in the screen door lock usually gets you down to one key, and it’s often done in the same visit as a rekey.

Rentals in Western Australia
Since 2019, WA rental homes have to meet minimum security standards. In short: the main entry door needs a deadlock, or a key-lockable security screen door that meets Australian Standard AS 5039; other external doors need a deadlock, patio bolt or compliant screen door; and external windows need locks. Check the full rules on the Consumer Protection WA site. We can bring a rental up to standard in one visit.
Note: we fit and repair the locks, not the screen doors themselves. If the door or its mesh is damaged, we’ll tell you and point you to a screen door company.

What’s the difference between a single lock and a triple lock?
A single lock bolts the door at the handle. A triple lock bolts it at three points at once, top, middle and bottom, so it’s much harder to force.
Why won’t my screen door lock?
Usually the door has dropped on its hinges or the frame has moved in the heat, so the bolts miss the frame. A worn cylinder or a broken spring inside the lock are the next most common causes.
Can my screen door use the same key as my front door?
Usually, yes. If the two locks are different brands, changing the screen door cylinder gets you down to one key.
Can you replace just the cylinder?
Often, yes. If the lock body is fine and only the key part is worn or you want it on your front door key, we replace the cylinder.
Do you fix Lockwood 8654 and Whitco locks?
Yes. We repair and replace Lockwood (including the 8654), Whitco (including the Tasman), Austral and Doric screen door locks.

Does a security screen door count for WA rental security?

My screen door lock has stopped working with the key. What is it?
Nearly always the cylinder rather than the whole lock. A screen door barrel is small and exposed to weather on both sides, so it wears faster than a front door lock. Replacing the barrel alone usually fixes it, and we can key the new one to your existing house key.
Can you fix a Whitco screen or sliding door lock?
Yes. Whitco is on a great many Perth doors and the Tasman is the one we see most. The cylinder, the tongue and the internal springs are the usual failures, and in most cases the part can be replaced without changing the whole lock.
What is a Lockwood 8654?
A three-point triple lock — it throws bolts at the top, middle and bottom of a security door from one handle. It is on a large number of Perth security doors. When one point stops engaging it is normally the rods out of adjustment or the door sagging, not the lock body.
My flyscreen door lock is jammed. Is it worth fixing?
Flyscreen locks are lighter than security screen locks and jam more easily, usually from grit or a bent tongue. They are generally cheap enough that replacing outright beats repairing.
Can you replace a security door handle on its own?
Yes. Handles snap and the return springs fail so the handle droops. A handle set can usually be replaced without touching the lock itself.
