Digital locks for rentals and Airbnb
Codes instead of keys, and no rekeying every time someone moves out.
A digital lock lets you give each tenant, guest or cleaner their own code and delete it when they leave, so there are no keys to chase or locks to rekey. For short-stay hosts, an app lock with remote access lets you set codes from anywhere.
- Guests
- Own code, deleted after checkout
- Tenants
- No rekey between leases
- Remote codes
- App + WiFi or hub
- Check first
- Lease or strata rules
Why hosts switch
No keys to hand over
Lost and copied keys are the usual reason landlords rekey between tenants. With a code, you delete the old one and set a new one in seconds.
Short-stay hosting
For Airbnb and other short stays, choose a lock with an app and remote access, so you can set a code for each booking without driving over. Some brands need a gateway hub for that; we’ll tell you which.
Cleaners and tradies
Give them their own code, limited to when they need it if the lock allows, and see when the door was opened.
Check before you fit
- Tenants: ask your landlord first, and check your lease.
- Units and apartments: check the strata rules, especially for front doors onto common areas.
- Keep a backup way in, such as a key, in case the batteries go flat.
We fit McGrath, Lion Head, Lockton, Carbine, Lockwood and Yale. See the digital door locks page, or our work for landlords and property managers.
Straight answers
Can I set a code that only works during a booking?
Some app locks let you set time-limited codes. Tell us how you host and we’ll suggest a model that does it.
Do I still need to rekey between tenants?
Not for the digital lock itself: delete the old codes. If the lock has a backup key and it went missing, rekey that cylinder.
Can I fit a digital lock in a rental I’m renting?
Ask your landlord first. Many are happy to agree if you put the original lock back when you leave.
